Project Overview

Composting is a simple method through which a significant portion of food waste can be managed locally and sustainably. Our senior design project focuses on the University of Notre Dame’s waste stream as we work to design a more sustainable solution for ND’s dining hall food waste.

Over the last few years, there have been a number of initiatives to cut down on the full tons of edible food that is left uneaten by students every day. Last year, the dining halls developed a pre-consumer waste metrics system and encouraged trayless dining among the students, which dropped waste totals significantly.

With the possibility of composting, there is an opportunity to close the loop on this issue and eliminate food waste from our dining halls, while educating students about sustainable and mindful living!

This project will be completed by a team of four senior civil and environmental engineering students: Rhetta Maynard, Matthew Kirian, Cameron Hart, and Monika Bueltel.
